Guide to Chocobo raising

Picture of a chocoboRaising chocobos can be done from CD2 onwards (after getting the Highwind). Here is what you'll absolutely need on your way to getting an S-rank Gold Chocobo:

This is what you will gain during the process:

The first thing to do is to catch the first two chocobos, a 'Good' one and a 'Great' one. So, rent two Chocobo Stables and buy some Greens to go hunting (the more expensive the Green, the more time you'll have to catch the chocobo before it escapes; so buy the best that you can afford).

Now, let's catch a Good chocobo. Equip yourself with a Chocobo Lure Materia (the one you bought on CD1, if you still have it, otherwise you can find one at the ranch on CD2). The area you want to search is the Gold Saucer Area. You can recognize Good Chocobos from the monsters which come with it: if they're Spencers, or if they're Flap Beats in the back row, you've found a Good Chocobo, so when you dismount from it, choose to send it to the stables.

Time for the Great chocobo. They can be found in the Mideel Area. There, if you find a chocobo coming with one or two Spirals, it's a Great Chocobo. It's better to catch two, because you can't check the gender till you ask Choco Billy to put your chocobo into the stables.

Now go to the ranch and put a Good chocobo and a Great chocobo into the two stables you've rented. Be sure they're of opposite gender. If the gender of your chocobos won't allow you to do such thing, go catch some other. It doesn't really matter which chocobo is male and which is female, but I found it's easier to get colored chocobos if the Good is male and the Great is female. Just easier this way, not required, so don't worry too much.

Now you need a Carob Nut. This kind of nut is carried by a big red reptile (Vlakorados). Equip yourself with a Steal Materia (it's not really required, but, if you go on trying to steal from the monster, you'll get the nut for sure, if you win without stealing, you might get it or not). Then go near Bone Village and wander at the feet of the mountain until you get to fight it. This monster has lots of HP, but its attacks are nothing great. You'll need more patience than skills to defeat it. Keep trying to Steal the Carob Nut from the monster... you can't get more than one in a single fight, so when you've got it, you can escape if you want, as you won't find another one if you defeat it. Note: I haven't checked, but it's said Morphing this monster will give you an Elixir. Cool, but what's the point? You can't Sense this monster, so you don't know when it's near death. ^_^;

If you don't mind doing it, just repeat the process till you have 3 Carob Nuts. But you can also get one nut now and come back later when you need more.

Now rent a third Chocobo Stable and save your game! You're gonna try mating the two chocobos, and if you don't get a Green Chocobo, if you have saved you can just quit and reload your game. This way you'll avoid having to get another nut, letting the chocobo go... annoying things.

Mate the Good and Great chocobos, using a Carob Nut. If you get a Green chocobo, take note what gender it is and save your game. Otherwise... retry. Sooner or later you should get one. If after many tries you don't succeed, feed your chocobos with some greens and retry. Feeding your chocobos should increase your chances of getting a Green chocobo.

If you happen to get a Blue chocobo now (unlikely, but it can happen), well... keep in mind that getting a Green one later, from the same parents, may be harder, and you might have to get more Good and Great chocobos. It's your call. I usually just retry until I get a Green one at this point.

With a Green Chocobo, you can visit Lucrecia's Waterfall, as well as get the Mime Materia. Ride your Green chocobo into the Highwind. Look for a cave east of mountains in the Wutai continent, land west of the mountains, cross them with the chocobo and enter the cave. Inside is the Mime Materia (it's really something!).

The next step is not really required, but it helps a lot and I recommend doing this. Train your yellow chocobos to B rank. In order to do this, you have to win 3 races on C rank with each chocobo. What track you choose doesn't really matter. They should be able to win easily, if this is not the case feed them some greens (some Mimmet and some Pahsana is a good choice) and they'll improve a bit.

Now you need your second Carob Nut. Rent a fourth Chocobo Stable, save your game and mate again the same chocobos you mated to get your Green Chocobo, use a Carob Nut and you should (hopefully) get a Blue Chocobo. Keep retrying till you get one you can mate with your Green Chocobo (they must be of opposite gender, obviously).

With a Blue Chocobo, you can get the Quadra Magic Materia. Ride your Blue Chocobo into the Highwind, and land on the thin island south of Mideel. Then walk through the shallow waters to a peninsula north-east of where you landed (it's not close, so if you explore the area from the sky first, it might be easier to find the path). There you'll find a cave. Inside it is the Quadra Magic Materia.

And now, the expensive stuff... you need the Sylkis Greens! Fly to the Chocobo Sage's house (you don't know where it is? Well, well, well... fly to the Northern continent. North of where you got the Carob Nuts, there should be a house surrounded by green and mountains. Land there, enter the house, talk to the old guy). Buy at least 20 Sylkis Greens from the Sage. Er, 20 is the amount you need now. If you've got the gil and want to get 40 or 50, so that you already have the ones you'll need later... you're welcome.

Feed 10 Sylkis Greens to your Green chocobo and 10 to your Blue chocobo. Then train both colored Chocobos to A rank. This means both your Green and Blue Chocobo will have to win 3 races on C rank and 3 races on B rank.

Either rent a fifth Chocobo Stable or let go one of your yellow chocobos (say the Good one). Then, again, save your game. Mate your Green and Blue chocobos using the third Carob Nut. This may take a couple of tries, but eventually you'll get a Black Chocobo! Take note of its gender because you'll have to mate it.

With a Black Chocobo, you can get the HP<->MP Materia. With the Highwind (be sure your Black Chocobo is inside), head to North Corel, then go North. You should see an entrance to a cave, placed beyond a river and some brown land. Get down. You couldn't cross this river with a Blue chocobo because of the conformation of its banks, but now with a Black chocobo, you can get to the cave, inside which is the HP<->MP Materia.

Now rent the last Chocobo Stable or let go the remaining yellow chocobo. Time for more hunting: go to the Icicle Area to catch a Wonderful Chocobo. You need a chocobo that comes with no Bandersnatches, only one or two Jumpings. And you must be able to mate it to your Black Chocobo, so catch two or three to have more chances to get the one you need.

Feed 10 Sylkis Greens to your Black Chocobo and 10 to your Wonderful Chocobo. Then train them both to S rank (train to A rank, win 3 more races).

Note: when you race in A rank, you might have to beat Teioh, a Black Chocobo (he sometimes shows up in B rank too, but it's rare). There's some bad news: Teioh's stats are always adapted so that he's better than your chocobo. To beat him, you need to use Manual Operation: it's very unlikely you'll beat him if you let your Chocobo race on its own. Teioh's sprint is incredible, so you better try to leave him back from the start and begin the sprint with a good advantage. This might be very difficult though if your Chocobo doesn't have enough stamina. Anyway, even if you're unable to beat Teioh, you needn't worry too much 'cause he doesn't always show up. So just keep racing till you take both chocobos to S rank.

Now the last step before mating the two S rank chocobos is finding the Zeio Nut. Take the Highwind to a group of islands in the North-east of the map and land on the forested one. Prepare to fight and equip one of your characters with a Steal Materia. It's better to equip the same character with a Ribbon or Headband. And if you want, equip an Enemy Skill Materia and a Manipulate Materia (not necessary, but...). You need to fight the Goblins that can be found in the forest and Steal the Zeio Nut from them. You can also learn the Goblin Punch Enemy Skill while you're at it. They'll use this attack pretty often, but just in case, you can Manipulate them and make them hit a character with the Enemy Skill Materia equipped. The Goblin Punch is a physical attack (you need no MP) which inflicts more damage if the attacker and the target are the same level.

Now free a Chocobo Stable, save your game and try to mate the Black Chocobo with the Wonderful Chocobo. You should get a Gold Chocobo!

Looking for the Summon KOTR Materia? Ok, I'll tell you where it is. KOTR is on an uncharted island in the North-East corner of the map. Just go there with the Gold Chocobo from the ranch (you can't get there with any other chocobo, and you can't land there with the Highwind). You're looking for Round Island. You'll recognize it from the round shape and the mountains all around a forest. Get down from the chocobo when in the forest, enter a cave and find KOTR.

It's your choice whether to feed 10 Sylkis to your Gold Chocobo too and train it to S rank. Winning in S rank can give cool prizes, but when I did the process, I was only able to win with my Gold Chocobo. In S rank, Teioh shows up very often.

Once you have an S rank Chocobo, if you go to Chocobo Square with Tifa or Cid, they might ask you to let them ride. It seems to have no effect on anything in the game, it's just for fun.
